The good side of the paper card
Credit where it’s due: the paper stamp card has worked for decades. It’s cheap, anyone understands it, it doesn’t depend on signal and customers like watching it fill up. For a new business that wants to test whether customers respond to a reward, it’s an easy way to start.
Where it fails
- It gets lost or left at home. Many cards end up at the bottom of a drawer with seven stamps. The customer doesn’t come back for the reward because they don’t even remember.
- It gets faked. A rubber stamp similar to yours costs very little.
- You know nothing. You don’t know how many cards are out there, how many customers come each week or who has stopped coming.
- You can’t reach them. If Tuesday afternoon is empty, you have no way of telling customers «double stamps today».
- You have to reprint. Every time you change the design or the reward.
What digital adds
The digital card lives in the customer’s phone wallet (Apple Wallet or Google Wallet), so they always have it with them. Your team stamps by scanning it with their phone and every stamp is recorded. From there, you get things paper can’t do:
- Lock-screen notifications when they’re one stamp away, when the reward is ready or on their birthday.
- A list of your customers with their visits, and a «haven’t come for a while» group you can message.
- Anti-cheating limits, like a maximum number of stamps per day.
- Instant changes: if you change the reward or design, all cards update automatically.

What about customers who don’t use their phone?
It’s the most common question, especially in businesses with older customers. There are several solutions:
- Your team can sign the customer up at the counter with their name and phone number, and look them up by name when they come back.
- You can run both for a while: paper for those who ask, digital for everyone else.
- If you already have a customer list with their stamps, you can import it so nobody loses what they had.
How to move from paper to phone without losing anyone
- Put the poster with the QR code next to the till and tell each customer: «the card is on your phone now, I’ll transfer your stamps».
- When someone brings their paper card, move the stamps to the digital one and keep the paper.
- Set a date after which you no longer stamp on paper, with a couple of months’ notice.
If you want to see it before deciding, you can try a sample café’s card from the home page or create your own for free.
Frequently asked questions
Can I transfer stamps from the paper card to the digital one?
Yes. When signing up the customer you add the stamps they had, or you can import a list with each customer’s balance.
Does it work offline?
The card shows in the wallet even without signal. To stamp, your team’s phone needs a connection.
