How to get more Google reviews for your business (without breaking the rules)

Almost all your happy customers would be willing to leave a review. The problem is nobody asks them at the right moment. Here’s how to do it properly.

Why they matter so much

When someone searches «café near me» or «hair salon in my area», the first thing they see is Google listings with their stars and number of reviews. A business with lots of recent reviews builds trust and usually gets more clicks. For a local business, reviews are the shop window for people who don’t know you yet.

The number one reason you don’t have more: you don’t ask

Most satisfied customers don’t leave a review on their own initiative, simply because it doesn’t occur to them. Those who do without being asked are often those who had a problem. So if you don’t ask, your reviews end up worse than your real service.

When to ask

  • Right after a good experience: at the till, when handing over a job, when redeeming a reward.
  • Customers who have already come back, who know you best.
  • Never weeks later: enthusiasm cools quickly.

Asking people to «search for us on Google and leave a review» has too many steps. From your Google Business Profile you can copy a link that opens the review window directly. Put it in a QR code next to the till, in your WhatsApp signature or in your loyalty card app, where the customer has it one tap away.

What Google doesn’t allow

Google’s rules on Maps content are clear, and breaking them can get reviews removed or your listing penalised:

  • Don’t offer anything in exchange for a review: no discounts, stamps or prize draws.
  • Don’t ask only happy customers. Asking first «would you give us 5 stars?» and sending only those who say yes to Google is forbidden. Ask everyone equally.
  • Don’t write fake reviews or ask family or staff to do it.
  • Don’t ask for them all on the same day from the same place in a mass campaign: it looks odd and Google may filter them.

How to reply

Reply to all of them, including the good ones. To good ones, a short, personal thank-you. To bad ones, calmly: thank them for the feedback, apologise if something went wrong and offer to talk privately. People reading your reviews pay more attention to how you respond to a bad one than to the bad one itself.

How Fidelizando does it

Your loyalty card app has a «Leave us a review» button that goes to your Google listing. You can also choose to have the app remind customers, from a certain visit onwards, that they can leave a review. Everyone is asked equally, with no reward in exchange, and in your dashboard you see how many people opened it. It’s in your own app.
